ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unpaid Allowances and Poor Welfare
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised alarm over worsening conditions in the country’s university system, warning that it may embark on a total and indefinite strike if urgent action is not taken. The development has already triggered concern among students and parents, many of whom are still recovering from past disruptions.
According to ASUU, the situation has reached a breaking point. Lectures are owed earned academic allowances and promotion arrears, working conditions and staff benefits continue to decline and the government is yet to fully honor parts of previous agreements with the union
While a nationwide strike has not yet been declared, some institutions are already experiencing some disturbance. Several state universities are reportedly at risk, with local branches of ASUU issuing ultimatums and preparing for possible action. Social media has been flooded with reactions from students expressing frustration and anxiety. For final-year students especially, the threat hits even harder. Now it is up to the government to act quickly and prevent another shutdown because without swift intervention, the warning could soon become reality.
As negotiations continue, millions of students are left watching and waiting, hoping that this time, a resolution comes before classrooms go silent again.
