First on the list is Fela Kuti. More than just a musician, Fela pioneered the Afrobeat genre, using his powerful lyrics to critique the government and society. Tracks like "Zombie" and "Lady" will ignite your spirit and spark a fire within you with the flow and rhythm.
Next, we have the Juju Maestro, King Sunny Ade—whose classic Juju sound and mesmerising talking drums made him an international star in the 80s. Groovy Hits like "Ja Funmi" showcase why his reign endures and will continue to.
And let's not forget the Queen—who walked so other female Nigerian artists could fly—Christy Essien Igbokwe, known as the Lady of Songs. Her enchanting and evocative vocals graced many highlife classics. Play "Joyce Blind" and "Meko" for some timeless vibes. Ras Kimono brought reggae roots and a message of struggle. Shina Peters, the creator of the Afro-Juju sounds, energised crowds with his electrifying performances and hits from the Shinamania era.
