From Kaduna to the EPL: 18-Year-Old Nigerian Starlet Zadok Yohanna Joins Brighton

Nigerian football player Zadok Yohanna has completed a major move to the English Premier League after signing for Brighton & Hove Albion from Swedish side AIK Stockholm on a five-year contract that runs until June 2031. The deal was officially confirmed by Brighton, marking another significant milestone in the teenager’s rapid rise through European football.

Zadok was overlooked for Nigeria’s U-17 team in 2023 and also missed out again on the U-20 squad, with coaches deciding other players were physically stronger and more mature. Fortunately, while playing for Kaduna-based Ikon Allah FC, the talented youngster caught the attention of scouts from Swedish giants AIK Stockholm. Zadok’s talent so convinced AIK scout Herish Sadi that the deal was completed that same day, and Zadok’s journey to Europe began.

His performances in Sweden attracted attention from several top European clubs, including Chelsea, Newcastle United, RB Leipzig, and others before Brighton won the race for his signature. Reports suggest the transfer could be one of the biggest sales in Swedish league history, with figures ranging above €20 million being widely discussed, although Brighton did not disclose the official fee.

Speaking after the move, Yohanna expressed pride in his journey from Nigeria to the Premier League, saying he was happy to have made his family proud. Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler described him as an exciting young attacker with pace, creativity, and the ability to influence games in the final third.

The same player Nigeria passed on is now headed to the Premier League. One major takeaway from Yohanna’s story is that life really has a funny way of rewarding those who refuse to give up.
