“Grow a Thick Skin If You Desire Fame. You Will Definitely Need It” - Timi Dakolo Shares Bizarre ‘Love Child’ Rumour

Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has shared a bizarre experience that perfectly captures one of the unexpected downsides of fame.

Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has given aspiring celebrities a glimpse into one of the strangest realities of fame after an innocent interaction with a child at an event allegedly turned into a bizarre online rumour.

The singer shared the experience on Instagram, using it to warn people who dream of becoming famous about the scrutiny, gossip and unexpected stories that can come with being in the public eye.

According to Dakolo, he was at an event when a little girl refused to return to her mother after he had carried her. Rather than force the child away, the singer said he ended up looking after her for the rest of the evening. What appeared to be an innocent and harmless interaction, however, allegedly took a completely different turn once it reached social media.

Dakolo said he later came across posts suggesting that the little girl was his daughter, with some people allegedly referring to her as his “love child.” The singer appeared both amused and frustrated by how quickly an ordinary moment could be transformed into a completely different story online. Recalling the incident, he wrote:

“I carried a little girl at an event, she just wouldn’t go back to her mum. So I parented her all evening. Next thing I saw online, Timi and his love child are inseparable.”

Dakolo then summed up his reaction to the bizarre situation:

“This space is a mad house.”

For Dakolo, the incident was more than just a funny story. He used it as an example of the challenges that come with celebrity status. The singer warned aspiring public figures that fame can expose them to rumours and speculation they may have little or no control over.

“Grow a thick skin if you desire fame. You will definitely need it.”

He added:

“You can go to bed a happy fellow and wake up with news of you in some mess.”

According to the singer, once someone becomes famous, even ordinary activities can attract unusual attention, with people constantly looking for something interesting or controversial to say about them. Dakolo’s experience highlights one of the less glamorous sides of celebrity life: the loss of privacy and the possibility of innocent moments being misunderstood or exaggerated. An act as simple as carrying a child at an event was, according to the singer, enough for people online to create an entirely different narrative about his personal life.

The singer, who won the inaugural Idols West Africa competition in 2007 before establishing himself as a successful singer and songwriter, has spent years in the public eye. And if his latest experience is anything to go by, Dakolo’s message to aspiring celebrities is clear:

If you want fame, be prepared for the attention and for the rumours that may come with it.
