History Maker: Temitope Adeshina Ends Nigeria's 72-Year Wait for Commonwealth High Jump Medal

Nigerian high jumper Temitope Adeshina has etched her name into the country's sporting history after claiming bronze in the women's high jump at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, ending a remarkable 72-year wait for a Nigerian podium finish in the event.

History Maker: Temitope Adeshina Ends Nigeria's 72-Year Wait for Commonwealth High Jump Medal

The 19-year-old rising star cleared 1.90 metres to secure third place in a fiercely contested final at the Glasgow Games, finishing behind Australia's Eleanor Patterson, who soared to gold with a Games record of 1.96 metres, and fellow Australian Nicola Olyslagers, who claimed silver with 1.93 metres.

Adeshina's performance marked a significant improvement from her Commonwealth Games debut four years ago, where she finished 10th in Birmingham, demonstrating her remarkable progress and composure on the international stage.

Adeshina's achievement is particularly historic as she becomes the first Nigerian woman ever to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the high jump, and only the third Nigerian overall to achieve this feat.

The last Nigerian to stand on the Commonwealth Games podium in the high jump was Emmanuel Ifeajuna, who won gold at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, Canada.

Before him, Josiah Majekodunmi had secured silver at the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland, earning Nigeria's first-ever medal in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

Currently a student-athlete at Texas Tech University in the United States, Adeshina has enjoyed a breakthrough season, winning both the NCAA indoor and outdoor high jump titles before heading to Glasgow.

She also holds the Nigerian women's high jump record of 1.97 metres, a mark that qualified her for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and established her among Africa's elite high jumpers.

Her bronze medal in Glasgow adds another memorable chapter to her rapidly growing career and highlights the steady resurgence of Nigerian athletics beyond the traditional sprint events.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) hailed the achievement as a landmark moment for Nigerian athletics, with Kola Daniel, Special Adviser on Media to the Director-General of the NSC, describing Adeshina's performance as a reward for years of hard work and consistent improvement.

Her bronze also boosted Team Nigeria's medal tally in Glasgow, where the country remained Africa's highest-ranked nation on the medal table.

With age still firmly on her side, Adeshina is expected to play a key role in Nigeria's athletics ambitions at future international competitions, including the World Athletics Championships, the African Championships, and the 2028 Olympic Games.
