“If You Bring Family Drama Online, You’re Not Serious” - Seun Kuti Weighs In on VeryDarkMan and Sowore Saga

Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has stirred fresh reactions online after addressing the ongoing tensions involving controversial activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), and political activist Omoyele Sowore.

“If You Bring Family Drama Online, You’re Not Serious” - Seun Kuti Weighs In on VeryDarkMan and Sowore Saga

In a blunt statement that quickly made the rounds on social media, Seun Kuti criticised the growing trend of taking deeply personal and family-related issues to the internet for public consumption. He explained that several people had approached him, questioning why he hadn’t publicly commented on the issue involving VDM and Sowore. In response, he clarified that he has already expressed his views, just not online. According to him, many expect him to come to social media to share his opinions about his friends, but that is something he has no intention of doing.

He added that the only people who truly need to hear his stance are VDM and Sowore themselves, and he has already communicated directly with them. Seun Kuti also advised against turning serious, real-life issues into online content, emphasising that not everything should be brought to the public space for engagement or entertainment.

According to him, “If you bring your personal issues online, you bring your family issues online to come do content, you’re not serious with your life,” a remark that many interpreted as a direct reaction to the unfolding drama between VDM and Sowore.

The comment comes amid heightened online discourse surrounding VeryDarkMan, a figure known for his outspoken takes on corruption, social justice, and public accountability in Nigeria. Martins Vincent Otse has built a large following through his “online police” style of activism, often calling out public figures and institutions, a method that has earned him both loyal supporters and vocal critics.

In recent developments, tensions escalated following exchanges between VDM and Omoyele Sowore, drawing public attention and sparking widespread debate about activism, accountability, and personal conduct in the digital age. Reports indicate that such clashes have become a recurring feature of Nigeria’s online civic space, often blurring the line between advocacy and personal disputes.

Seun Kuti’s intervention adds another layer to the conversation, particularly given his own background as both a musician and a social commentator. Known for his outspoken views on governance and societal issues, the son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti has often positioned himself as a voice of ideological activism rather than performative outrage.

His recent statement appears to question the intent behind some forms of online activism, suggesting that turning private or family matters into content undermines credibility. Also, he cited the desire for him to weigh in on the ongoing VDM & Sowore situation, where personal narratives and public accusations have increasingly intersected.

The reaction to Seun Kuti’s statement has been mixed. Some Nigerians praised him for calling out what they see as clout-driven behaviour in the digital space, arguing that serious advocacy should remain focused on systemic issues rather than personal conflicts. Others, however, defended VDM’s approach, noting that his style, though controversial, has helped spotlight issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

For many young Nigerians navigating fame, activism, and content creation, the pressure to remain relevant can blur boundaries between private life and public engagement. Seun Kuti’s comments, therefore, strike at the heart of a growing concern: whether the pursuit of attention is beginning to overshadow the substance of advocacy.
