Kunle Remi Speaks Out on Rising Petrol Prices, Urges Nigerians to Demand Accountability

Kunle Remi has criticised rising petrol costs and called for more open conversations and collective action, as Nigerians continue to grapple with economic pressure.

Nollywood actor Kunle Remi has voiced frustration over the rising cost of petrol in Nigeria, joining a growing number of public figures speaking on the country’s economic challenges.

In a series of videos shared online, the actor rejected the idea that celebrities should remain silent on political or economic matters, stressing the need for open conversations and engagement.

“Usually I say things like I don’t really get involved with politics… No, that’s the most stupid statement from anyone in Nigeria right now,” he said. “We should be discussing, we should be talking about it, we should be trying to fix… There’s nothing like sitting on the fence.”

Remi pointed to the direct impact of fuel prices on daily life, highlighting how businesses and households rely heavily on petrol to function. He noted that he recently purchased petrol at over 1,300 naira per litre, adding that the situation raises concerns about the future, especially as a parent.

He also questioned why Nigeria appears highly vulnerable to global oil market disruptions, referencing ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Expressing frustration, he said the situation undermines the value of people’s efforts and earnings.

In a follow-up video, the actor called for unity and collective action among Nigerians, urging citizens to move beyond regional differences.

“They can’t kill everybody. If we move in our numbers… we will conquer our oppressors,” he said, while also addressing differing opinions among his peers regarding the government’s handling of the economy.

His comments come at a time when petrol prices remain high across the country, despite developments such as the start of domestic refining operations. Market trends show that a recent increase in pump prices has persisted, with little immediate relief for consumers.

Remi’s remarks have since gained traction online, with many Nigerians expressing support and describing his comments as reflective of widespread public sentiment over the rising cost of living.
