NYSC Official in Police Custody Over Death of Corps Member in Ogun
An NYSC official in Ogun State is in police custody following the death of a corps member, Victoria Ariyo, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
An official of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, is currently in police custody following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta.
According to a report by Daily Trust, Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, died on Tuesday from complications linked to a terminated pregnancy. She has since been buried at Kobape Cemetery along Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
The report also revealed that her death came just weeks after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under unclear circumstances in the same local government area. Mary was serving at Ogun State Television as her place of primary assignment. A source told Daily Trust that both women were friends.
While Mary’s cause of death remains unknown, Ariyo’s case has raised further concern. Sources cited by Daily Trust alleged that the NYSC official, who serves as the Local Government Inspector for Abeokuta South, may have been involved in circumstances leading to Ariyo’s death.
A police source confirmed that the official is currently being held at the state command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta. The source also stated that there is no link between Ariyo’s death and the earlier case involving Mary.
The police spokesperson in Ogun State, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that Ariyo’s death is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department. However, he did not provide details regarding the reported arrest or allegations.
Efforts to reach the NYSC spokesperson in the state, Emmanuel Igba, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
