Paraguay Defeat Turkey to Boost Knockout Hopes as Almiron Sees Red in World Cup Clash
Paraguay strengthened their chances of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Turkey, who were eliminated from the tournament after suffering a second consecutive defeat in Group D.
The South Americans made the perfect start when Matias Galarza found the back of the net just 64 seconds into the contest. The midfielder unleashed a strike from outside the box to score the fastest goal of the tournament so far, a goal that ultimately proved decisive.
Paraguay’s task became significantly more difficult in first-half stoppage time when captain Miguel Almirón was sent off following a video review. The former Newcastle United midfielder received a red card after placing his hand over his mouth during a confrontation with Turkey defender Mert Müldür, becoming the first player to be dismissed under a newly introduced World Cup rule governing such conduct.
Reduced to 10 men, Paraguay were forced to spend much of the second half defending against relentless Turkish pressure.
Turkey dominated possession and created the majority of the chances but failed to convert their opportunities. Defender Merih Demiral came close, while substitute Deniz Gül squandered a clear header from close range after the break.
Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill was repeatedly called into action, producing several important saves to preserve his side’s lead. Turkey’s frustration continued late in the game when Can Uzun forced another stop from Gill before Deniz Gül sent the rebound wide.
The defeat extends Turkey’s goal drought at the tournament, having failed to score in either of their opening two matches despite creating numerous opportunities. According to Opta statistics, Turkey have attempted 62 shots across their first two games, the most by any team without scoring over a two-match span at the World Cup since records began in 1966.
Vincenzo Montella’s side also dominated possession in both outings, recording 71.6 percent against Australia and 78.5 percent against Paraguay. Despite posting a higher expected goals (xG) figure than their opponents in both matches, Turkey have been unable to translate their attacking dominance into goals.
The result leaves Turkey with no chance of progressing to the knockout rounds regardless of the outcome of their final group-stage match against the United States.
For Paraguay, the victory keeps qualification firmly within reach. After suffering a 4-1 defeat to the United States in their opening game, they now know that a win over Australia national soccer team in their final Group D fixture would secure passage to the knockout stage.
