“‘Unfit to Lead’ — Wole Soyinka’s Strong Words on Peter Obi Ignite Political Firestorm”

Nigerian literary icon Wole Soyinka has ignited a nationwide political debate after stating that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is “unfit to lead the country,” citing concerns over the conduct of his supporters during the last general election.

“‘Unfit to Lead" — Wole Soyinka’s Strong Words on Peter Obi Ignite Political Firestorm

Speaking in a recent interview with Noble Nigeria, Soyinka said his conclusion was not based only on Obi himself, but on what he described as the “encouraged conduct” of his supporters, popularly known as the Obidients, during the 2023 election season.

According to him, the behaviour of some supporters, especially online attacks directed at people with opposing political views, was a major red flag that raised questions about leadership judgment and control.

Soyinka argued that a potential national leader must demonstrate the ability to manage a diverse and highly sensitive society like Nigeria, where ethnicity, religion, and political ideology often intersect. He suggested that failure to rein in supporters who engage in hostility reflects poorly on leadership capacity.

The literary icon further accused Obi of indirectly fostering an environment in which critics and opposing voices, including himself, were allegedly targeted by aggressive online supporters. He maintained that such patterns of behaviour are unacceptable for anyone aspiring to lead a multi-ethnic nation.

Expanding on his position, Soyinka stated that his concern extends beyond personal disagreement, stressing that Nigeria requires leaders capable of uniting diverse groups around a shared national identity. He warned that leaders who cannot control divisive movements around them may struggle to govern effectively.

In one of his strongest remarks, Soyinka said he hopes Obi does not contest the 2027 presidential election, adding that his assessment is based on what he described as clear evidence from the last election cycle.

“I hope for the sake of the nation that he doesn’t express interest in the next election because, for me as a leader, if there was any proof that he was unfit to lead that country, it’s in the conduct which he encouraged among his followers…” Soyinka stated.

The comments have immediately sparked heated reactions across Nigeria’s political and online spaces. Supporters on argue that thet is largely peaceful and youth-driven, insisting that Soyinka’s claims generalise the actions of a few individuals.

Others, however, believe Soyinka has raised a valid concern about the nature of political followership in Nigeria and the responsibility of candidates to guide their supporters.

The debate has since intensified across social media, with discussions focusing on political tolerance, online behaviour, and what defines leadership suitability in a diverse democracy.
