The United States Embassy in Abuja has suspended visa appointments amid growing security concerns in the Federal Capital Territory, sparking concern among applicants and the general public.
The embassy informed that affected applicants are to check their email for rescheduled dates. It also noted that visa operations at the U.S. Consulate in Lagos are reportedly continuing as normal. The notice was announced on Thursday, 9th of April and it was confirmed that though the visa appointments for Nigerians are closed, the services for American citizens are still available although it is limited to appointments and emergency situations.
This development is coming amid heightened security concerns and follows recent travel advisories issued by the United States government regarding parts of Nigeria. The advisory highlights northern states such as Borno, Yobe, and Taraba, along with others including Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Zamfara, as particularly dangerous due to ongoing security challenges
An updated travel advisory now urges U.S. citizens to reconsider traveling to the country due to concerns over crime, terrorism, and civil unres. While Nigeria is broadly classified under “Level 3: Reconsider Travel,” several states have been placed under the more severe “Level 4: Do Not Travel” category due to heightened risks.
