Folarin Balogun was the hero and the villain on a dramatic night at Levi's Stadium as the USMNT booked their place in the Round of 16 with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 24-year-old Monaco forward opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time with a close-range finish, his third goal of the tournament, but was sent off in the 64th minute after catching defender Tarik Muharemovic with his studs following a reckless challenge.
The red card briefly threatened to derail the home side's hopes, but Malik Tillman's stunning free-kick in the 82nd minute sealed the win and sent the partisan crowd into raptures. The first half was a tale of American dominance frustrated by a disciplined Bosnian defence.
The US controlled possession and pressed relentlessly, with Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams dictating the tempo in midfield. Balogun had a goal ruled out for offside in the 32nd minute after reacting quickest to a loose ball, but he continued to be a constant menace to the Bosnian backline.
The deadlock was finally broken just before the break when Balogun pounced on a deflected pass inside the box and slotted past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.
The second half was a test of American character. Balogun's red card in the 64th minute handed Bosnia a lifeline, but Mauricio Pochettino's men dug deep and defended resolutely.
Goalkeeper Matt Freese, making just his second World Cup start, was called into action early in the match with two saves to deny Ermedin Demirovic and Kerim Alajbegovic, but was rarely troubled thereafter. Bosnia, despite their numerical advantage, lacked the creativity to break down the organised American defence, with veteran striker Edin Dzeko largely isolated.
The decisive moment arrived eight minutes from time when Tillman stepped up to a free-kick just outside the box and curled a magnificent effort into the top corner past Vasilj. It was a goal that extinguished any lingering hopes of a Bosnian comeback and confirmed the United States' progression to the Round of 16 where they will face Belgium in Seattle on Monday, 6 July.
For the US, the win snapped a 10-game losing streak against European opposition dating back to 2022, while Bosnia's impressive tournament debut came to an end.
