WAFCON 2026 Delay Sparks Uncertainty as Morocco Insists on Readiness
Morocco says it was fully prepared to host WAFCON 2026 as scheduled, as CAF’s unexplained postponement continues to raise questions weeks after the decision.
The postponement of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations continues to generate uncertainty, with Moroccan officials insisting the country was fully ready to host the tournament as originally planned.
Three weeks after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) moved the competition from its initial March window to July 25 to August 16, no detailed explanation has been provided for the decision. CAF had cited “unforeseen circumstances” and ongoing consultations with partners, FIFA, and other stakeholders, but has not offered further clarity.
Morocco’s trade minister, Ryad Mezzour, has pushed back against any suggestion that the host nation was unprepared, stating that the country remains ready to stage the tournament “any time.”
The lack of transparency has led to speculation within football circles, including suggestions that Morocco’s congested football calendar may have influenced the decision. However, CAF has yet to confirm or deny these claims.
With the new dates now set, attention remains on the governing body to provide clearer reasoning, as stakeholders and fans continue to seek answers over the abrupt scheduling change.
