England Survive France’s Stunning Fightback to Claim World Cup Bronze in Miami Thriller

England and France delivered a breathtaking World Cup thriller in Miami, with England surviving a stunning second-half comeback to secure a dramatic 6-4 victory and claim the bronze medal.

England ended their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign on a high, defeating France 6-4 in an extraordinary third-place playoff that swung wildly between complete English dominance and an inspired French resurgence before Jude Bellingham finally settled one of the tournament’s most unforgettable contests.

What initially looked like a routine victory transformed into a chaotic spectacle that showcased both sides at their exhilarating best. England produced a devastating first-half display to race into a four-goal lead, only for Kylian Mbappé to spearhead an astonishing French comeback that threatened to rewrite the script before Bukayo Saka and Bellingham ensured Thomas Tuchel’s side left Miami with the bronze medal.

England wasted little time asserting themselves, controlling possession and dictating the tempo against a France side that struggled to contain their relentless attacking movement. The breakthrough arrived through Declan Rice, whose powerful strike from outside the penalty area gave England an early advantage and set the tone for an outstanding opening 45 minutes.

Although Saka briefly thought he had doubled the lead, the Arsenal winger saw his effort ruled out for offside. England, however, remained undeterred.

Ezri Konsa soon made it 2-0 before Saka finally got the goal his performance deserved. Moments later, the winger struck again to complete a breathtaking first-half spell that left France shell-shocked and England heading into the interval with a commanding 4-0 advantage.

At that stage, the contest appeared effectively over. Instead, it produced one of the most dramatic second halves of the tournament.

France emerged from the dressing room with renewed aggression and purpose, led by Mbappé, who once again demonstrated why he remains one of world football’s defining players. A clever pass from Michael Olise released the Real Madrid forward to score France’s first goal, immediately injecting belief into Didier Deschamps’ side.

The momentum shifted quickly. Mbappé then turned provider, setting up Bradley Barcola to reduce the deficit further as England suddenly found themselves under sustained pressure after appearing comfortably in control.

When Mbappé struck again to make it 4-3, the comeback felt increasingly inevitable. France dominated possession, created chances and came agonisingly close to drawing level, with Olise nearly completing a flowing attacking move that would have erased England’s four-goal advantage entirely.

Having looked untouchable before halftime, England were now clinging desperately to their lead. Their relief arrived when Djed Spence was brought down inside the penalty area by Malo Gusto. Saka confidently converted the resulting spot-kick to complete his hat-trick and restore England’s two-goal cushion, seemingly ending France’s remarkable revival.

Even then, Les Bleus refused to surrender. Ousmane Dembélé struck again to make it 5-4, ensuring another tense finale as France continued searching for an equaliser. But with England needing one final moment of inspiration, Bellingham delivered it.

The midfielder embarked on a brilliant solo run, weaving through multiple French defenders before calmly finishing to seal a memorable 6-4 victory and cap another outstanding individual tournament. After driving England throughout the World Cup, Bellingham fittingly had the final word.

For England, the result secured their highest World Cup finish since lifting the trophy on home soil in 1966. While missing out on the final remained a disappointment, the performance offered a fitting conclusion to a campaign that reaffirmed the nation’s emergence as one of international football’s strongest sides under Thomas Tuchel.

For France, the defeat marked the end of an era. Despite nearly producing one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup history, Didier Deschamps bowed out after another successful spell in charge, bringing the curtain down on a reign that delivered global success and established France as one of the dominant forces of modern international football.

Although only the bronze medal was at stake, England and France produced a contest worthy of a World Cup final. Ten goals, dramatic momentum swings, individual brilliance and late twists combined to create a match that will be remembered as one of the defining spectacles of the 2026 tournament.
