Boko Haram Faction Issues 72-Hour Ultimatum Over 416 Captives in Borno State

A faction of Boko Haram known as JAS has reportedly issued a 72-hour ultimatum concerning 416 people abducted during a violent attack on Ngoshe community in Borno State, raising renewed fears over the safety of the captives and the security situation in Nigeria’s North-East region.

Boko Haram Faction Issues 72-Hour Ultimatum Over 416 Captives in Borno State

The group is said to have carried out the mass abduction on March 4, when its fighters overran a military base in the area, killing several residents, including the local Chief Imam, before taking hundreds of people hostage. The attack marked one of the most severe incidents in recent months, further highlighting the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups in the region.

In a video released on April 19, the JAS faction demanded a ransom of NGN5 billion for the release of the captives. The group reportedly directed its demand to BOSYA, a local mediating body involved in ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis, as well as the Nigerian government. The insurgents warned that failure to meet their demand within the stipulated 72-hour window would result in the dispersal of the hostages or their execution.

The ultimatum has triggered heightened concern among residents and stakeholders, especially as the April 22 deadline approaches. Families of the abducted victims remain in distress, awaiting any form of resolution or communication regarding the fate of their loved ones.

BOSYA, which has been acting as an intermediary in the crisis, has called for urgent intervention from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, top government officials, and prominent Nigerian business figures, including billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote. The group stressed that immediate action is needed to prevent a potential humanitarian disaster.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, there has been no official statement from the Nigerian military or the federal government regarding the ultimatum or the ransom demand as of the time of reporting. This silence has further deepened anxiety in affected communities and raised questions about the government’s response strategy to mass abductions.

The incident adds to the long-standing security challenges in Borno State, which has been one of the epicentres of insurgency in Nigeria for over a decade. While military operations have weakened Boko Haram’s territorial control in recent years, sporadic attacks and kidnappings continue to threaten civilians and disrupt livelihoods.

For now, uncertainty hangs over the fate of the 416 abducted individuals, as families and observers await urgent action in what has become another critical test of Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insurgency.
