NECO to Begin Computer-Based Exams This Year - Federal Government Announces Major Education Reform

The Federal Government has announced that the National Examinations Council (NECO) will begin conducting computer-based examinations this year as part of efforts to modernize Nigeria’s education system and reduce examination malpractice.

NECO to Begin Computer-Based Exams This Year - Federal Government Announces Major Education Reform

Nigeria’s education sector is set for major transformation as the Federal Government officially confirm plans for the National Examinations Council (NECO) to commence computer-based examinations this year.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during NECO’s 25th anniversary celebration in Abuja. According to the minister, the move is aimed at tackling examination malpractice and improving the credibility of Nigeria’s assessment system.

Speaking on the reform, Alausa stated that the introduction of computer-based examinations marks a significant step toward aligning Nigeria’s educational standards with global practices. He explained that the new system would allow authorities to monitor candidates in real time, detect suspicious activities, and reduce exam fraud. He also highlighted ongoing reforms such as e-certificates, digital verification systems, and upgraded examination logistics.

The transition also reflects a broader government plan to fully digitize major public examinations in Nigeria.  This step is in line with JAMB who has adopted the computer-based testing for a while with officials citing improved security, faster result processing, and reduced malpractice as reasons.

Beyond reducing cheating, it is believed that the CBT practice could help students develop stronger computer literacy skills and better prepare them for a technology based future. However, concerns have also emerged over infrastructure challenges, including electricity supply, internet access, and the readiness of schools in rural communities.

With the planned introduction of computer-based exams, National Examinations Council is entering a new era of digital assessment.
