Heartbreak for Arsenal as PSG Retain Champions League Title in Penalty Shootout Drama

Paris Saint-Germain have won back-to-back Champions League titles after beating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on Saturday.

Heartbreak for Arsenal as PSG Retain Champions League Title in Penalty Shootout Drama

Arsenal could not have asked for a better start. Just five minutes into the match, a clearance from PSG captain Marquinhos deflected off Leandro Trossard and fell perfectly for Kai Havertz, who was surging down the left wing. The German forward carried the ball into the box and fired a powerful shot into the roof of the net, leaving PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov with no chance.  It was the second time Havertz has scored the opening goal in a Champions League final, and for a moment, it looked like Arsenal's name might be written on the trophy. The Gunners then dropped deep in typical Mikel Arteta fashion, allowing PSG to have all the possession while daring them to break through a stubborn backline.  PSG dominated the ball with nearly 75 percent possession in the first half, but they struggled to create clear chances against William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, who were rocks at the heart of Arsenal's defense.

The game changed early in the second half when Arsenal defender Cristhian Mosquera, who had already been booked for time wasting, brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area. Referee Daniel Siebert pointed to the spot after a VAR review, and reigning Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele stepped up. The French winger sent Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya the wrong way, calmly slotting into the left corner to make it 1-1 in the 65th minute.  PSG pushed hard for a winner after that, with Kvaratskhelia hitting the post following a deflection and Vitinha forcing a fine save from Raya with a powerful shot from the edge of the box.  Arsenal thought they should have had a penalty of their own in extra time when Nuno Mendes appeared to pull down Noni Madueke, but the referee waved play on and VAR did not intervene.

With nothing separating the two sides after 120 minutes, the final was decided from the penalty spot for the first time since 2016.  The shootout was tense from start to finish. Goncalo Ramos scored first for PSG, and Viktor Gyokeres replied for Arsenal. Desire Doue made it 2-1 before Eberechi Eze dragged his penalty wide to give PSG the advantage. Nuno Mendes then missed for PSG, and Declan Rice stepped up to level the scores at 2-2. Achraf Hakimi restored PSG's lead, Gabriel Martinelli kept Arsenal alive, and then Lucas Beraldo calmly converted PSG's fourth penalty.  That left Gabriel Magalhaes with the weight of Arsenal's hopes on his shoulders. The Brazilian defender blasted his spot-kick over the crossbar, and PSG had done it.

This victory is historic for PSG. They become the first French club to win back-to-back Champions League titles, following their 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the 2025 final.  Luis Enrique has now won the competition three times as a manager, joining an elite group of coaches.  For Arsenal, this is a crushing way to lose their first Champions League final in 20 years. They had just won the Premier League days earlier and were chasing a double, but they fell short at the final hurdle.  Bukayo Saka, Arsenal's talisman, had a nightmare game with almost no impact on the attack, and Arteta's decision to start Havertz over Gyokeres paid off with a goal but could not deliver the trophy.  The Gunners will wonder what might have been, but on the night, PSG were clinical when it mattered most.
