Belgium Frustrated in Scoreless Draw as Iran Hold 10-Man Red Devils in Los Angeles

Belgium's World Cup struggles continued as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by a resilient Iran side at SoFi Stadium, with the Red Devils forced to play the final half-hour with 10 men after Nathan Ngoy's red card.

Belgium Frustrated in Scoreless Draw as Iran Hold 10-Man Red Devils in Los Angeles

Belgium arrived in Los Angeles desperate to get their World Cup campaign back on track after a lackluster opening draw against Egypt, but they left California with more questions than answers. The Red Devils dominated possession and created a flurry of chances, but they simply could not find a way past Iran's brilliant goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand and a stubborn defense that refused to crack.

Record scorer Romelu Lukaku was unexpectedly recalled to the starting line-up after injury had confined him to substitute appearances in recent matches, but he was largely ineffective and off form. Fellow striker Jeremy Doku missed out through illness, leaving Belgium without one of their most dangerous attacking threats. Iran had the ball in the net on 25 minutes when striker Mehdi Taremi converted a clever free-kick, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR check spotted he was offside.

That disallowed goal seemed to galvanize the Iranians, who grew in confidence as the first half wore on. Belgium continued to push forward, with Youri Tielemans and Maxim De Cuyper both forcing sharp saves from Beiranvand, but the final touch was either lacking or simply nonexistent. The frustration was evident as Lukaku skied a good headed chance from Tielemans' cross in the 36th minute. The game turned decisively in the 66th minute when young defender Nathan Ngoy miskicked a backpass towards his own goal, allowing Taremi to intercept.

Ngoy brought down the Iranian striker as he raced through on goal, earning a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia immediately reshuffled his team, taking off Lukaku and bringing on defender Arthur Theate as the Red Devils switched to damage control. The numerical disadvantage actually opened up the game, with spaces appearing in the Belgium defence and Iran suddenly finding themselves in the role of aggressor.

Thibaut Courtois was twice forced into excellent saves to keep the score level. The result leaves both Belgium and Iran tied on two points at the top of Group G after two matches each. Belgium needed an own goal to salvage a draw against Egypt in their opener and were woeful in the final third even with all 11 players on the field. You have to go all the way back to the first group stage game of the 2022 tournament to find the last time a Belgian player scored.

The Red Devils had 23 shots and posted an expected goals (xG) of 1.8, but they simply could not find the breakthrough. Belgium now face New Zealand in their final group match, while Iran will take on Egypt. With the knockout stage hanging in the balance, the pressure on Garcia's side has never been greater.
