Salah Inspires Egypt to Historic First-Ever World Cup Win with Comeback Over New Zealand

Mohamed Salah scored one goal and assisted another as Egypt came from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver, securing the country's first-ever World Cup victory in their 92-year history at the tournament.

Salah Inspires Egypt to Historic First-Ever World Cup Win with Comeback Over New Zealand

Egypt had never won a World Cup match in eight previous attempts, but that painful statistic is finally history. The Pharaohs, roared on by a passionate crowd at BC Place in Vancouver, fell behind early but produced a stunning second-half turnaround to claim a 3-1 victory over New Zealand in their Group G clash. The win lifts Egypt to the top of the group with four points after two matches, putting them in pole position to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time in their history.the early signs were ominous for the African giants.

New Zealand defender Finn Surman rose above the Egyptian backline to power home a header from Tim Payne's corner in the 15th minute, giving the All Whites a shock lead and silencing the sea of Egyptian supporters in the stadium. The Kiwis, who had drawn their opening match with Iran, were full of confidence and looked capable of causing another upset. Egypt pushed for an equalizer but struggled to break down a stubborn New Zealand defense, with goalkeeper Max Crocombe denying Omar Marmoush's powerful effort in the 27th minute.

But whatever Hossam Hassan said in the dressing room at half-time worked wonders. Egypt emerged a completely different side after the break, and the equalizer arrived in the 58th minute when Mostafa Ziko rose to meet Mohamed Hany's precise cross with a well-placed header to make it 1-1. Nine minutes later, the momentum swung decisively in Egypt's favour.

Ziko and Salah exchanged a quick one-two before the Liverpool forward cut inside and bent a powerful left-footed strike past Crocombe to put Egypt ahead for the first time. The goal, Salah's 68th for his country, moved him just one behind manager Hassan's all-time scoring record.Substitute Mahmoud Hassan, popularly known as Trezeguet, then sealed the historic victory in the 82nd minute, powering home a superb header from Salah's outswinging corner to make it 3-1. The result marks Egypt's first-ever World Cup win in their fourth appearance at the finals, having previously participated in 1934, 1990, and 2018 without a single victory. Salah, who had a forgettable World Cup campaign in 2018 and failed to qualify four years later, finally had his moment on the biggest stage.

"It's a great achievement for all the players. It's a great vibe. The next game is very important," he said after the match. With a point against Iran in their final group game, Egypt will qualify for the knockout round for the first time in their history.
