Messi, Mbappé and Haaland Dominate World Cup Scoring Charts in Historic Early Goal Rush

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is witnessing an extraordinary goalscoring spectacle, with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland leading the charge. The superstar trio have combined for 13 goals in just two matches each, igniting an early Golden Boot race and helping drive one of the most prolific starts in World Cup history.

Messi, Mbappé and Haaland Dominate World Cup Scoring Charts in Historic Early Goal Rush

Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland have set the 2026 FIFA World Cup alight, each powering their nations with prolific early goals in a start to the tournament that is already rewriting record books.

Messi leads the scoring charts with five goals from two matches after his latest brace for Argentina against Austria, a performance that also saw him surpass Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record.

Mbappé and Haaland are tied just behind him on four goals each, with both forwards also delivering standout performances within hours of the Argentine’s milestone night.

Mbappé marked his 100th international appearance with a double in France’s win over Iraq, responding directly to Messi’s record-breaking display and keeping France firmly on course in their group.

Haaland then joined the surge in goalscoring form, scoring twice as Norway defeated Senegal to secure qualification for the Round of 32, extending his reputation as one of world football’s most clinical finishers.

Remarkably, this is only the second time in World Cup history that three players have scored at least four goals after just two matches, and the first instance since 1954.

The scoring explosion has created a rare sense of parallel competition at the top of the charts, with each of the three superstars seemingly responding to the others’ output in real time.

Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist described the trio’s performances as a reflection of different elite qualities, highlighting Messi’s all-round brilliance, Mbappé’s explosive impact, and Haaland’s ruthless finishing ability.

French football analyst Julien Laurens also noted the mindset driving the trio, suggesting that beyond the Golden Boot race, the pursuit of historical records may be fueling their extraordinary start to the tournament.

The competition for the Golden Boot is already shaping up as one of the defining storylines of the World Cup, with Harry Kane also expected to enter the race after opening his campaign with a brace for England.

With records falling early and elite forwards in peak form, the tournament has already produced what observers are calling a “superstar start,” with more milestones likely as the group stage continues.
