Mexico Stay Perfect With 3-0 Win Over Czech Republic to Finish Group Stage Unbeaten

Mexico completed a perfect group stage campaign for the first time in their World Cup history, beating the Czech Republic 3-0 at the Azteca Stadium to finish Group A with nine points and no goals conceded.

Mexico Stay Perfect With 3-0 Win Over Czech Republic to Finish Group Stage Unbeaten

The co-hosts entered the match already assured of top spot in Group A, but Javier Aguirre's side showed no signs of complacency as they produced a dominant second-half display to send the Czech Republic packing. After a slow and disjointed first half that saw both teams struggle to create clear-cut chances, Mexico finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. Mateo Chavez, the 22-year-old left-back making his first World Cup start, raced beyond the Czech defense onto a through ball and kept his composure to fire low past goalkeeper Matej Kovar for his first international goal.

The goal opened the floodgates. Just six minutes later, Jorge Sanchez broke free on the right flank and saw his initial effort blocked, but Julian Quinones reacted quickest to pounce on the rebound and fire home his second goal of the tournament to make it 2-0. The co-hosts controlled the closing stages with ease, preserving their clean sheet before Alvaro Fidalgo put the result beyond doubt in the fourth minute of stoppage time, curling a shot into the top-left corner after receiving Roberto Alvarado's pass.

The victory marked a historic achievement for Mexico, as they won all three of their group-stage matches for the first time in their World Cup history. Their previous best group-stage performance was two wins and one draw, achieved in 1986 and 2002, with Javier Aguirre involved in both campaigns, the first as a midfielder and the second as El Tri's coach. The perfect record is even more impressive given that Mexico scored six goals and crucially conceded none throughout the entire group stage.

There were also notable individual milestones in the match. Gilberto Mora, at just 17 years old, became the youngest Mexico player to start a World Cup match . Meanwhile, 40-year-old goalkeeper Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa entered the match in the 77th minute, joining Argentina's Lionel Messi and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players to appear in six World Cups. The veteran goalkeeper's appearance was met with a standing ovation from the home crowd at the iconic Azteca Stadium.

The match was not without its moments of frustration, however. Mexico were wasteful in the first half, with Israel Reyes seeing an acrobatic bicycle kick drift wide and Roberto Alvarado lifting an effort over the crossbar. The game was also disrupted by a hydration break in the first half, despite the post-sunset conditions in Mexico City . But ultimately, Mexico's quality told, and they will now remain at home for their Round of 32 clash at the Azteca Stadium on Tuesday.
