South Africa Make History With 1-0 Win Over South Korea to Reach Knockout Stage for First Time

South Africa wrote their names into the history books by defeating South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey to reach the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in their nation's history.

South Africa Make History With 1-0 Win Over South Korea to Reach Knockout Stage for First Time

Bafana Bafana arrived in Monterrey needing a victory to secure second place in Group A, and they delivered when it mattered most. Thapelo Maseko's second-half strike in the 63rd minute proved to be the difference as South Africa stunned their Asian opponents to claim a historic qualification. The goal came from a precise pass by Tshepang Moremi, with Maseko controlling the ball with one touch before shifting onto his left foot and burying a powerful shot into the far corner, leaving South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu with no chance.

The first half had been a tense affair, with South Korea starting strongly despite leaving captain Son Heung-min on the bench. The Asian side threatened early when Kim Min-jae's powerful header was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba in the 2nd minute, and Lee Kang-in fired over from inside the penalty area shortly afterwards.

South Africa gradually grew into the contest and nearly struck in the 19th minute when Maseko raced onto a through ball, only for Lee Gi-hyuk to produce a superb last-ditch tackle.

South Africa had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 30th minute when Thalente Mbatha unleashed a powerful shot from outside the penalty area, forcing Kim Seung-gyu to parry the ball into the path of Evidence Makgopa. However, the South African striker could only tamely poke his shot straight at the goalkeeper from close range . The miss looked like it could prove costly, but South Africa's persistence paid off in the second half.

Son Heung-min was introduced at the start of the second half as South Korea searched for a breakthrough, but the South African defense held firm . As news filtered through from Mexico City that the co-hosts were leading the Czech Republic, South Africa's urgency increased, and they seized their moment through Maseko . The goal sparked wild celebrations among the South African players and fans, who had waited decades for this moment.

The victory gave South Africa four points from their three matches, enough to secure second place in Group A behind Mexico . South Korea finished with three points and must now wait to see if they qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

South Africa had failed to advance from the group stage in their first three World Cup appearances in 1998, 2002, and 2010, and the achievement marks a significant milestone for African football. Bafana Bafana will now face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28 in the Round of 32.
