Ecuador Stun Already-Qualified Germany 2-1 to Secure Knockout Berth in Thrilling Comeback

Ecuador produced a rousing fightback to beat Germany 2-1 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, securing their place in the last 32 after coming from behind against the Group E winners .

Ecuador Stun Already-Qualified Germany 2-1 to Secure Knockout Berth in Thrilling Comeback

Germany, who had already clinched first place in Group E with victories in their first two matches, started the game at full throttle and took the lead in just the second minute. Leroy Sané fired the Germans ahead with a clinical finish, giving the impression that the European giants would cruise to another comfortable victory .

However, Ecuador had other plans and responded almost immediately, stunning the German defense with a well-worked equalizer just seven minutes later. Nilson Angulo finished off a rapid counter-attack with a brilliant strike from the edge of the area after Felix Nmecha lost possession in midfield, sending the Ecuadorian fans at MetLife Stadium into a frenzy.

The first half continued at a frantic pace, with both sides creating chances. Germany had a penalty at the start of the second half, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review that showed a foul in the build-up, much to the relief of the South Americans. The miss proved costly as Ecuador grew in confidence and began to believe they could pull off a famous victory against the four-time world champions. Julian Nagelsmann's decision to start two ball-players in midfield at the expense of a more combative presence was exposed as Ecuador exploited the gaps left behind.

The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata poked the ball past the veteran German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who had come out of international retirement for the World Cup. The goal came from a corner kick that was nodded on by Kevin Rodríguez, and Plata showed quick reflexes to toe-poke the ball into the net just as Neuer was about to grasp it.

The goal sparked wild celebrations on the Ecuador bench and in the stands, as the South Americans realized they had secured a historic victory over the European giants.

The win moved Ecuador to four points in Group E, enough to finish third and secure one of the eight best third-place spots to advance to the knockout stages. It marked only the second time Ecuador had progressed beyond the group stage, the first being a Round of 16 appearance in 2002.

The result also had implications for other teams chasing the best third-place spots, as it dented Scotland's hopes of advancing . Germany, despite the defeat, finished top of Group E with six points, while Ivory Coast's 2-0 victory over Curacao saw them finish second on six points and also advance to the Round of 32.
