History Makers: Pépé Double Fires Ivory Coast Into First-Ever World Cup Knockout Round

Ivory Coast made history at the 2026 World Cup, advancing to the knockout stage for the first time in their four tournament appearances thanks to a Nicolas Pépé brace in a 2-0 victory over Curacao at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia .

History Makers: Pépé Double Fires Ivory Coast Into First-Ever World Cup Knockout Round

The Elephants entered the match knowing victory would guarantee qualification, and they wasted no time asserting their authority on the contest. Just seven minutes into the game, 19-year-old winger Yan Diomandé intercepted a defensive error inside the Curacao penalty area and unselfishly squared the ball for Pépé, who calmly slotted home his first goal of the evening to give Ivory Coast an early lead.

The early strike settled the Ivorians and allowed them to dictate the tempo, dominating possession and controlling the midfield battle throughout the first half. Curacao, who had shocked observers with a 0-0 draw against Ecuador in their previous match, showed they were not prepared to roll over. The Caribbean side grew into the game as the first half progressed, with Leandro Bacuna coming closest to equalizing just before the break when his effort fizzed narrowly past the post.

However, Ivory Coast's defence, marshalled by Odilon Kossounou and Ousmane Diomande, remained resolute and ensured Yahia Fofana in goal was rarely troubled. The second half saw Curacao start brightly, with Sherel Floranus testing Fofana with a powerful strike that flew just over the crossbar. But any hopes of a comeback were extinguished in the 64th minute when Ibrahim Sangaré played a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Pépé, who expertly converted his second goal of the night to double the lead and effectively seal the result. The Villarreal winger's brace underlined his importance to the team, providing the cutting edge when it mattered most.

The victory propelled Ivory Coast to second place in Group E on six points, finishing behind Germany who also had six points but topped the group due to their head-to-head victory over the Ivorians. For a nation that had previously failed to escape the group stage in three World Cup appearances, this was a historic achievement that sent their fans into wild celebrations. The Elephants will now face the runner-up from Group I, either France or Norway, in the Round of 32 on June 30 in what promises to be a stern test of their credentials .

For Curacao, the defeat brought an end to a challenging but memorable World Cup campaign. The Caribbean nation, with a population of just 158,000, made history simply by qualifying for the tournament for the first time . After a heavy 7-1 loss to Germany and a creditable goalless draw with Ecuador, they were unable to spring an upset against the Ivorians, but they depart with their heads held high having given a good account of themselves on the biggest stage of all.
