Spain Edge Uruguay 1-0 to Top Group H as Cape Verde Make History

Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Uruguay in Houston to finish top of Group H, sending the South Americans home as Cape Verde's draw with Saudi Arabia saw the debutants advance to the knockout stage.

Spain Edge Uruguay 1-0 to Top Group H as Cape Verde Make History

Spain entered their final Group H match knowing that a draw would guarantee top spot, but they produced a professional performance to defeat Uruguay 1-0 at Houston Stadium. The European champions controlled possession throughout, dictating the tempo of the match and creating numerous chances against a desperate Uruguayan side fighting for their tournament lives.

Alexis Baena scored the only goal of the game in the 42nd minute, finishing off a well-worked team move to put Spain ahead. Uruguay pushed forward in search of an equalizer, knowing that a draw could still be enough to secure one of the best third-placed spots, but Spain's defence held firm.

The South Americans created a few half-chances, with Darwin Núñez and Facundo Pellistri both testing Unai Simón, but they were unable to find a way past the Spanish goalkeeper. Spain managed the game effectively in the closing stages, keeping possession and frustrating their opponents to secure the victory.

The result meant Spain finished top of Group H with seven points from three matches, securing their place in the Round of 32 with a perfect record of two wins and a draw. Uruguay, on the other hand, finished third in the group with two points and were eliminated from the tournament, as their goal difference was not enough to secure one of the eight best third-placed positions.

The defeat ended a disappointing campaign for the South Americans, who had struggled for goals throughout the group stage. Spain's victory, combined with Cape Verde's 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia, meant the Blue Sharks finished second in Group H on three points and advanced to the knockout stage in their World Cup debut.

Spain will now face the second-placed team from Group J in the Round of 32, while Cape Verde will face Argentina in what promises to be a historic and challenging encounter for the tournament debutants. Spain will be confident of progressing further in the tournament as they continue to build momentum.
