Africa Makes History: Record Nine Teams Qualify for World Cup Round of 32

Africa has rewritten World Cup history after an unprecedented nine of its 10 representatives secured places in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, shattering the previous record of just two African teams reaching the knockout stage in a single edition .

Africa Makes History: Record Nine Teams Qualify for World Cup Round of 32

The 2026 World Cup group stage has delivered a historic moment for African football that will be remembered for generations. Morocco, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Cape Verde, Senegal, Ghana, Algeria, and DR Congo all secured their places in the knockout rounds after 17 days of intense competition across North America. Tunisia, unfortunately, were the only African side eliminated in the group stage.

This unprecedented achievement represents a seismic shift in the balance of power in world football, proving that African teams can no longer be treated as underdogs on the global stage. Morocco set the tone early in the tournament, holding Brazil to a 1-1 draw in their opening match before securing two victories to finish second in Group C behind Brazil on goal difference.

The Atlas Lions, who made history as the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022, will now face the Netherlands in the Round of 32. South Africa also made history by reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time ever, recovering from an opening defeat to co-hosts Mexico by drawing with Czech Republic and beating Korea Republic to finish second in Group A. Bafana Bafana will face Canada in Los Angeles on June 28 .

Cape Verde emerged as one of the tournament's surprise packages. The World Cup debutants went unbeaten in the group stage with draws against Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia to book a place in the knockout phase, becoming the first team since Chile in 1998 to reach the knockout stage without winning a group match. They will face defending champions Argentina in a David versus Goliath clash that has captured the imagination of football fans worldwide.

Egypt also advanced after finishing second in Group G, holding Belgium to a draw before securing their first-ever World Cup win against New Zealand . The Pharaohs will face Australia in the Round of 32.

Senegal's qualification was one of the most dramatic of all nine. After consecutive defeats to France and Norway, the Teranga Lions needed a massive victory in their final match to keep their hopes alive. They responded with a stunning 5-0 demolition of Iraq, setting a new record for the largest win by an African nation at a World Cup . The result improved Senegal's goal difference to +2, enough to secure the final eighth spot among the best third-placed teams.

Ghana also secured qualification from Group L with four points from their opening two matches, while Algeria sealed their place with a thrilling 3-3 draw against Austria that saw Riyad Mahrez score what looked like the winning goal before Austria equalised with the final kick of the match.

DR Congo completed Africa's historic representation by securing their first-ever World Cup victory, coming from behind to beat Uzbekistan 3-1 in their final group match. The victory earned the Leopards a place in the knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history, where they will face England in the Round of 32.

The previous record for African teams reaching the knockout stage was just two, set in 2014 when Algeria and Nigeria advanced in Brazil . Before this tournament, only six African nations had ever reached the World Cup knockout stage in the competition's entire history.

The 2026 World Cup, the first edition featuring 48 teams and a Round of 32, has provided African football with a platform to showcase its incredible depth and quality on the biggest stage of all.
