Heartbreak for Ivory Coast as Haaland's Late Strike Ends Historic World Cup Dream

Ivory Coast's historic World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end as Erling Haaland scored an 86th-minute winner to give Norway a 2-1 victory in their Round of 32 clash, crushing the Elephants' dreams of a first-ever knockout stage victory.

Heartbreak for Ivory Coast as Haaland's Late Strike Ends Historic World Cup Dream

The Elephants made history just by getting this far. For the first time in their four World Cup appearances, Ivory Coast had advanced beyond the group stage, finishing second in Group E behind Germany after victories over Ecuador and Curacao. Standing in their way was a Norwegian side playing in their first knockout match since 1998, and the Ivorians started the match with the defensive discipline that had served them so well throughout the tournament.

They successfully isolated Erling Haaland for large periods, with the Manchester City striker barely touching the ball in the first half. Norway, however, had other weapons. The breakthrough came in the 39th minute when Martin Ødegaard threaded a pass to RB Leipzig winger Antonio Nusa, who cut inside before curling a magnificent effort beyond goalkeeper Yahia Fofana into the top corner.

The strike was a landmark moment for Norwegian football, becoming the country's first goal in a World Cup knockout match since making their tournament debut in 1938. Despite trailing, Ivory Coast refused to be overwhelmed by the occasion and grew into the game after the break.

Coach Emerse Faé introduced fresh attacking options, including Amad Diallo and Sébastien Haller, who asked more questions of the Norwegian defence. The persistence paid off in spectacular fashion in the 74th minute when Diallo, who had been reduced to the bench despite his group-stage performances, produced a moment of magic.

The Manchester United winger raced past two defenders, got to the byline, cut inside, and drove a powerful low finish into the far corner to level the contest. The goal was one of the tournament's best, shifting the momentum firmly in Ivory Coast's favour as the African champions created several dangerous attacks.

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Norway produced the decisive moment. Midfielder Patrick Berg broke into the penalty area and squared the ball to a completely unmarked Haaland at the far post, who calmly slotted home from close range in the 86th minute. The goal was Haaland's fifth of the tournament and his 60th in just 53 international appearances, further cementing his status as one of world football's most lethal finishers.

Ivory Coast threw numbers forward in a frantic finale, but Norway held on to end the Elephants' historic campaign. Norway will now face Brazil in the Round of 16, a mouthwatering clash that pits Haaland's red-hot form against the five-time world champions.
