Senegal Suffer Heartbreaking World Cup Exit After Belgium Comeback

Senegal’s dream of a deep run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking end after a dramatic late comeback by Belgium.

Senegal Suffer Heartbreaking World Cup Exit After Belgium Comeback

Belgium produced one of the most remarkable comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, recovering from a two-goal deficit to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time and book their place in the Round of 16.

Youri Tielemans emerged as the hero, converting a 125th-minute penalty after a VAR review confirmed that Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara had fouled him inside the box. The midfielder calmly fired his effort into the top corner to complete a stunning turnaround that had looked improbable for much of the contest in Seattle.

Senegal had appeared destined for the quarterfinals after dominating large periods of the match. Habib Diarra opened the scoring in the 25th minute after Ismaila Sarr’s effort struck the post and fell kindly into his path, before Sarr doubled the advantage six minutes into the second half with a composed finish after controlling a long pass from Moussa Niakhaté.

The West Africans had earlier struck the woodwork twice and looked in complete control as Belgium struggled to create meaningful opportunities despite introducing Romelu Lukaku at halftime.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the closing minutes. Lukaku gave Belgium hope when he turned in Thomas Meunier’s low cross at the near post before Tielemans headed home Leandro Trossard’s delivery just minutes later to force extra time.

With penalties looming, Belgium were awarded a decisive spot kick in the dying moments after Camara slid into Tielemans while attempting to clear a dangerous cross. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, and Tielemans converted to send Belgium into the next round.

The victory keeps Belgium’s World Cup title hopes alive and sets up a Round of 16 meeting with the winner of the clash between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For Senegal, the defeat marks a heartbreaking end to an impressive campaign. The Teranga Lions became the fourth African nation to exit the competition in the Round of 32 after South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire and DR Congo, having let a commanding two-goal lead slip in the closing stages.
