Haaland Joins Messi and Mbappe on 7 Goals as Norway Stun Brazil 2-1 to Reach Quarter-Finals

Erling Haaland scored twice to take his tournament tally to seven goals, joining Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe at the top of the Golden Boot standings as Norway stunned five-time world champions Brazil 2-1 to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

Haaland Joins Messi and Mbappe on 7 Goals as Norway Stun Brazil 2-1 to Reach Quarter-Finals

Haaland's second-half double not only sent the Nordic nation into the quarter-finals for the first time ever but also propelled him into a three-way tie for the Golden Boot with Messi and Mbappe, who also have seven goals each. The 25-year-old Manchester City striker now has an astonishing 62 goals in 55 international appearances, further cementing his status as one of the most lethal finishers in world football.

For 78 minutes, it looked like Brazil would eventually find a way through, with Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo causing problems for Norway's defense. But in the 79th minute, the game turned on its head when Andreas Schjelderup whipped in an excellent cross from the left, and Haaland rose above Gabriel Magalhães to power a header past Alisson, crashing the ball into the far corner to silence the MetLife Stadium.

Brazil pushed forward desperately in search of an equalizer, but their urgency left them exposed. In the 90th minute, Haaland struck again, this time from outside the box, receiving the ball, taking a touch, and firing a blistering shot across Alisson into the far corner to make it 2-0. The strike was his 62nd international goal and moved him level with Messi and Mbappe in the Golden Boot race.

Norway's goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland also deserves immense credit, saving a first-half Bruno Guimarães penalty that could have changed the entire complexion of the game. The spot-kick was awarded after a VAR review when Patrick Berg was ruled to have handled the ball inside the area, but Nyland dove to his right to deny the Brazilian midfielder.

The first half was a cagey affair, with Norway surprisingly dominating possession. They controlled the tempo and looked the more composed side, while Brazil struggled to find their rhythm. Bruno Guimarães' saved penalty was Brazil's best chance of the opening period.

In the second half, Brazil improved but still lacked the cutting edge that had carried them through the group stage. Neymar, brought on as a substitute, was largely ineffective until adding a consolation penalty in the 96th minute after a foul on Casemiro. But it was too little, too late. The final whistle confirmed one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 World Cup.

Norway will now face the winner of the England vs Mexico quarter-final, with Haaland firmly established as the tournament's most dangerous striker alongside Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi. The three superstars are now locked in a thrilling race for the Golden Boot, with each goal separating them from history.

For Brazil, the defeat marks their earliest World Cup exit since 1990 and raises serious questions about the team's ability to deliver on the biggest stage. Despite boasting a squad filled with attacking talent, Brazil once again fell short when it mattered most.
