Ronaldo's Final World Cup Dream Ends in Heartbreak as Spain's Late Strike Stuns Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo's illustrious World Cup career came to a crushing end as Mikel Merino's 91st-minute winner sent Spain into the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Portugal in Dallas, ending the 41-year-old legend's dream of lifting the trophy on his final attempt.

Ronaldo's Final World Cup Dream Ends in Heartbreak as Spain's Late Strike Stuns Portugal

The Iberian derby at the AT&T Stadium was a tense affair from the start, with both sides cancelling each other out in a first half that promised much but delivered little in terms of clear-cut chances. Spain started brightly, with Mikel Oyarzabal missing a golden opportunity in the ninth minute when he was played clean through on goal but pulled his shot wide.

Portugal grew into the game as the half progressed, and their best moment came when Nuno Mendes' fierce strike deflected off Pedro Porro and crashed against the crossbar, leaving the Spanish defence relieved. Ronaldo himself forced a routine save from Unai Simon in the 37th minute, but it was a rare sight of the Portuguese captain truly testing the Spanish goalkeeper.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Spain's formidable defence, which had yet to concede a goal in the tournament, frustrating Portugal's attack at every turn. Bruno Fernandes came closest to breaking the deadlock when his shot sailed just wide of the near post in the 76th minute, but it was a moment of individual brilliance rather than sustained pressure from the Portuguese.

As the clock ticked down, it seemed the match was destined for extra time, with both sides seemingly content to avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Then came the hammer blow. In the 91st minute, substitute Ferran Torres played a clever through pass behind the Portuguese defence, and Mikel Merino, who had replaced Pedri, raced through to slot a composed low finish past Diogo Costa.

The goal sent the Spanish bench into wild celebrations and left Portugal with just minutes to salvage their World Cup dreams. Bernardo Silva came agonisingly close to equalising in the final minute of stoppage time, but his flicked header landed on the roof of the net, sealing Portugal's fate.

The defeat brought an end to Ronaldo's sixth and final World Cup campaign. The 41-year-old, who had become the first player to score in six different editions of the tournament, cut a frustrated figure throughout the match, feeding on scraps and unable to influence proceedings.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez, who is reportedly set to step down after the tournament, leaves behind a legacy of unfulfilled potential with a squad that many believed could challenge for the title.

For Spain, the victory extends their remarkable defensive streak to five matches without conceding, and they will now face the winner of the USA-Belgium clash in the quarter-finals.
