"Is the Five Years for the Man Only?" – Jarvis Reacts to Court Wedding's Prison Warning

Content creator Jarvis has sparked fresh reactions online after questioning whether the five-year imprisonment warning for bigamy issued during her court wedding to Peller applies only to men or to both spouses, a query that has left fans both amused and reflective.

"Is the Five Years for the Man Only?" – Jarvis Reacts to Court Wedding's Prison Warning

The couple officially tied the knot in a civil ceremony in Lagos on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in the presence of family and close friends.

During the proceedings, the marriage registrar delivered a stark legal warning, informing the couple that anyone who contracts another marriage while still legally married commits the offence of bigamy, which attracts "a minimum of five years imprisonment, with no option of a fine".

The warning immediately caught Peller's attention, as he laughed and paused the proceedings to ask why prison was being mentioned during a marriage ceremony.

Days later, as the couple revisited their wedding footage, Jarvis admitted that the warning had stayed on her mind. In a now-trending video, she said, "The five years imprisonment something, I just saw the video again, asides the joke, I had to think about it again".

She then posed a question that has since gone viral: "Is it for the men only? Or is it for the two of us?" . She playfully speculated that Peller's dramatic reaction during the ceremony might have been because the warning was directed specifically at men.

The registrar's warning, however, was clear and applied equally to both parties. Under Section 370 of the Nigerian Criminal Code and the Marriage Act, bigamy is a criminal offence that applies to anyone who contracts a marriage while still legally married to another person, regardless of gender.

The offence is punishable by a minimum of five years imprisonment without the option of a fine.

The warning was not gender-specific, but Jarvis's playful interpretation has sparked fresh debates about the legal implications of marriage.

Reactions online have been swift and varied, with some fans finding her question amusing while others have pointed out that the law applies to both spouses equally. Despite her playful speculation, Jarvis quickly brushed aside any negative thoughts, declaring, "Nothing will happen in Jesus' name o". The couple's court wedding marks the legal start of their union ahead of their white wedding, scheduled for August 1, 2026.
