Tobi Amusan Wins Bronze at Commonwealth Games as Historic Three-Peat Bid Ends in Glasgow

Nigeria’s sprint hurdling star Tobi Amusan has added another major medal to her collection after finishing third in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games, ending her bid for a historic third consecutive gold.

Nigeria’s sprint hurdling star Tobi Amusan has added another Commonwealth Games medal to her impressive collection after securing bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Amusan clocked 12.60 seconds in Thursday’s final to finish third, missing out on a historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. The Nigerian had arrived in Glasgow as one of the favourites for the event after recording a season’s best of 12.28 seconds and targeting a third straight Commonwealth title following her victories at the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham Games. However, she faced a strong challenge in the final, with Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton taking gold in 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds claimed silver after finishing in 12.41 seconds.

The bronze medal means Amusan will not defend the Commonwealth title she won in Birmingham four years ago, where she stormed to gold in a Games-record 12.30 seconds.

Her latest medal nevertheless extends an extraordinary record at the Games and adds another major international achievement to the résumé of Nigeria’s world-record holder. The result came after an impressive qualifying performance, with Amusan winning her heat in 12.19 seconds, although the time was wind-assisted and therefore not legal for record purposes.

Injury Concern Emerges

Following the final, reports indicated that Amusan had been dealing with a knee injury after suffering a fall during training, with the athlete reportedly pointing to the injury as a factor in her performance.

Despite the setback, the Nigerian star still managed to finish on the podium and secure a medal for Team Nigeria. For Amusan, the Glasgow result may not have been the gold medal she came for, but bronze keeps her among the medal winners at another Commonwealth Games.

And with more major competitions ahead, Nigeria’s hurdles queen will be hoping to put the disappointment behind her and return stronger.
