WAFCON Heartbreak: Cameroon Send Super Falcons Packing in 1-0 Defeat

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have suffered a painful WAFCON quarter-final exit after Cameroon secured a narrow 1-0 victory, leaving Nigeria with a tougher road to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Super Falcons’ WAFCON title defence has suffered a major blow after Cameroon stunned Nigeria 1-0 in a tense quarter-final clash in Morocco.

Nigeria’s hopes of marching into the WAFCON semi-finals and securing an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup have been dashed after the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon edged them out in a dramatic quarter-final encounter.

Cameroon struck early, with Nyadjou finding the back of the net in the 19th minute to give the Lionesses a crucial lead.

But if Cameroon had the goal, Nigeria had the pressure.

The Super Falcons pushed forward in search of an equaliser and created several promising opportunities, only to repeatedly come up against Cameroon’s goalkeeper, Michaely Bihina.

Bihina was simply outstanding.

The Cameroonian shot-stopper made eight crucial saves, frustrating Nigeria’s attackers and keeping her side in front until the final whistle.

Despite their efforts, the Falcons could not find a way past the goalkeeper, as Cameroon held on for a famous 1-0 victory.

The defeat is more than just the end of Nigeria’s WAFCON campaign, it has also complicated their route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Only the four teams that reach the WAFCON semi-finals will earn automatic qualification for the World Cup.

With Nigeria eliminated at the quarter-final stage, the Super Falcons have now been forced into the African play-off route alongside the other three quarter-final losers. Nigeria will need to win that route to keep their World Cup dream alive and earn another opportunity to reach the inter-confederation play-offs.

So, while the door to the 2027 World Cup is not completely closed, the road has suddenly become much tougher.

For Cameroon, however, this was a night to remember. The Indomitable Lionesses stood firm against one of Africa’s most decorated women’s football teams and produced the result they needed when it mattered most.

One goal from Nyadjou. Eight saves from Bihina. And a determined defensive performance.

That was enough to send the Super Falcons crashing out.

Nigeria will now have to regroup quickly, because their World Cup dream is still alive but there is absolutely no room for another slip-up.
