ASUU Threatens Strike In Seven State Universities Over Unpaid Entitlements

ASUU Threatens Strike in Seven State Universities Over Unpaid Entitlements
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on an industrial action in Kebbi, Katsina and Zamfara states if the affected governments fail to pay outstanding salaries, allowances and other entitlements owed to university lecturers.
The union expressed disappointment at what it called the continued neglect of lecturers’ welfare despite several engagements with the state governments. ASUU said its members in the affected state-owned universities are still being owed earned academic allowances, promotion arrears, wage awards, salary adjustments and other financial benefits that are yet to be paid.
The union said lecturers were becoming more and more dissatisfied as successive promises by respective state governments to address the issues had not yielded any meaningful results.
The ASUU warned that it may have no choice but to go on industrial action if urgent steps are not taken, a move that could once again cripple academic activities and leave thousands of students stranded. The union said the long delay in settling the outstanding entitlements had a negative impact on the morale of staff and the smooth running of the universities.
It therefore called on the governments of Kebbi, Katsina and Zamfara to clear their financial obligations to lecturers immediately to prevent another strike.
No strike had officially begun at the time of this report. But the latest warning from ASUU has heightened fears among students and parents of another disruption to the academic calendar if the dispute is not resolved on time.
