BREAKING: UNIZIK Lecturers Declare Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid August Salaries

Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) have been thrown into uncertainty after lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared an indefinite strike.

The UNIZIK ASUU branch reportedly announced the withdrawal of services on September 7, 2026, following the failure of the university authorities to pay lecturers their full August salaries. According to the lecturers, the issue is not entirely new. The union reportedly said similar salary payment problems have occurred more than three times, despite previous efforts to address the situation.

ASUU’s position is that its standing resolution allows a branch to withdraw services when members’ salaries remain unpaid beyond the third day of the following month. With the September deadline already passed and some lecturers still waiting for the outstanding portion of their August salaries, the union decided to down tools. The industrial action reportedly affects both academic and administrative duties carried out by ASUU members. This means students could experience disruptions to lectures, academic activities and other university processes as the strike continues.

The lecturers are demanding the immediate payment of the outstanding portion of their August salaries and assurances that the recurring problem will be resolved. They have reportedly vowed to remain on strike until the full salary payment is made.

The development has naturally raised concerns among students, particularly those already dealing with academic delays and disruptions in Nigeria’s public university system.

Meanwhile, the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, reportedly declined to comment when contacted about the development, simply saying, “No comment.” For now, the message from UNIZIK lecturers appears clear:

No full salary, no resumption.
