CAS to Deliver Verdict on Senegal’s AFCON Appeal “As Swiftly As Possible”

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says it will fast-track its decision on Senegal’s appeal after CAF stripped them of the 2025 AFCON title and awarded it to Morocco.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has confirmed it will rule on Senegal’s appeal over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final “as swiftly as possible,” following a controversial decision that saw the title handed to Morocco.

Senegal had initially won the final 1-0 against Morocco on January 18. However, the result was later overturned to a 3-0 victory in favour of the hosts after intervention from the Confederation of African Football.

The controversy stems from a stoppage-time incident during the match, when Morocco were awarded a penalty.

In protest, Senegal’s players briefly walked off the pitch before eventually returning to complete the game. Following an appeal by the Moroccan Football Federation, CAF ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match due to the walk-off, leading to the revised scoreline and the stripping of their title.

Senegal have since taken the matter to CAS, seeking to overturn the decision and reclaim the trophy. CAS Director General, Matthieu Reeb, stated that while there is currently no fixed timeline for the ruling, the body is aware of the urgency surrounding the case and will aim to resolve it promptly while ensuring a fair hearing for all parties involved.

However, former CAF disciplinary panel head Raymond Hack has suggested the process could take several months, potentially extending into the period of the next FIFA World Cup.
