FG Rewards D’Tigress Players With $100,000 Each After Historic AfroBasket Win

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have received a huge reward from the Federal Government after making history with their remarkable victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

Following their historic achievement, each player of the D’Tigress squad was awarded $100,000, alongside a national honour and a plot of land. The Federal Government also rewarded members of the coaching and technical crew with $50,000 each, as well as national honours and land.

D’Tigress clinched their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title after defeating Mali 78-64 in the final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The victory gave Nigeria its seventh overall AfroBasket title and extended the team’s unbeaten run in the competition to 29 games dating back to 2015. The historic achievement also secured Nigeria a place in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

At a special reception held at the State House, Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu and announced the rewards for the players and technical crew. The players were also conferred with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national honour. Coach Rena Wakama, who made history as the first woman to lead a team to the AfroBasket title, was among those celebrated for her role in the team’s success. The government also praised the players for their determination, discipline and contribution to Nigerian sports.

The recognition comes as D’Tigress continue to cement their status as one of the most dominant women’s basketball teams in Africa.
