Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy has opened up about the inspiration behind his hit album I Told Them…, revealing that the project was driven by a desire to have fun, reconnect with his younger self, and prove that what he once said would happen had come to pass.
Speaking about the project, the Grammy-winning singer said the album’s title was deliberately straightforward.
“It’s self-explanatory. I’m really feeling like a kid again, just having fun with everything while proving to them what I said.”
Burna Boy explained that the album was partly inspired by looking back at things he had said earlier in his career and realising many of those predictions had eventually become reality. For Burna, I Told Them… was more than just another album. It celebrated his journey, his growth, and the confidence that came from seeing his dreams gradually become reality.
The project also let Burna Boy reconnect with the hip-hop that influenced him growing up, with collaborations featuring international names including J. Cole, 21 Savage, Dave, GZA, and RZA.
