“If You Don’t Have $1 Million, You’re Broke” - Segun Johnson Sparks Debate Over Wealth
Nigerian singer Segun Johnson has sparked a fresh debate about wealth and the rising cost of living after sharing his controversial definition of who qualifies as a millionaire today.
Nigerian singer and entertainer Segun Johnson has sparked a heated conversation online after sharing his thoughts on what it now means to be considered a millionaire in today’s economy.
Speaking during a conversation, the singer noted that financial standards have changed significantly, arguing that the amount of money considered “wealthy” years ago may no longer carry the same weight today. According to Segun, there was a time when having N30 million could comfortably earn someone the title of a millionaire. However, he believes the situation is different in the present day.
“Back then in those days, if you have 30 million, you are actually a millionaire. In this present age, if you don’t have $1 million, you are broke, you are not a millionaire. That’s the truth.”
Segun went even further, insisting that having N100 million does not necessarily make someone a millionaire by his definition.
“The fact that you have 100 million doesn’t make you a millionaire.”
The entertainer also appeared to put the statement into perspective by joking that someone with N1 million could still be considered wealthy depending on the community they find themselves in.
“But you might be a millionaire among people in Ojota, or probably people in Oworonshoki.”
His comments have since stirred reactions, with the singer’s definition of who qualifies as a “millionaire” likely to leave many Nigerians debating whether wealth should be measured by the amount of money someone has, their purchasing power, or their overall assets.
