JAMB Announces Mathematics Is No Longer Compulsory for Many University Courses in Nigeria
According to JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, the new policy means candidates applying for certain non-science courses may no longer need a credit pass in Mathematics to secure admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The change is part of a broader review of Nigeria’s tertiary admission guidelines aimed at removing barriers to higher education while maintaining academic standards. Under the new policy, students seeking admission into Arts, Humanities, and some Social Science courses can now qualify without Mathematics depending on the specific course and institution.
Examples of courses reportedly affected include subjects like Hausa, Arabic, Christian Religious Studies, and other programs where Mathematics is considered not directly relevant.
JAMB and the Federal Ministry of Education did emphasize on an important clarification: Mathematics remains a compulsory subject at the secondary school level (WAEC/NECO) and is still required for many science, engineering, business, and technical courses. The policy only changes tertiary admission requirements for selected courses, not the entire school curriculum.
The announcement has generated mixed reactions online. While many students and parents have welcomed the move as long-overdue, others worry it create confusion around admission requirements.
For many students especially those pursuing arts and humanities; this policy could open new doors to university admission but students should always make sure to check their specific course requirements before applying.
