NUT Declares Indefinite Strike in Oyo Over Abducted Teachers, Schoolchildren
The Nigeria Union of Teachers has declared an indefinite strike across public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State following the abduction of teachers and schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area.
Just weeks ago, on May 15 2026, armed men attacked three schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire LGA, kidnapping dozens of pupils and students alongside several teachers. The victims reportedly include about 39 students and seven teachers, while at least one teacher, identified as Michael Oyedokun, has been beheaded.
In a new directive signed by NUT national leaders, teachers were ordered to withdraw their services from June 1, 2026, and remain at home until all abducted colleagues and learners are safely released. The union said it could no longer continue normal academic activities while educators and children remain in captivity under what it described as “horrifying” and traumatic conditions. The strike is also being accompanied by planned solidarity rallies across Nigeria, with the union expected to protest and demand stronger protection for schools, teachers, and students. The development has increased pressure on both the Seyi Makinde administration and the Federal Government. In response, President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Oyo State and ordered intensified rescue operations involving top security officials.
The incident has sparked nationwide concern over insecurity in schools, with many parents worried about the safety of children in rural communities and renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect learning environments.
