The First Lady made the call in a statement on Sunday, September 20, 2026, as Nigeria marked World Cleanup Day 2026, themed "From Clean Plates to Clean Cities."
According to her, the focus on food waste is particularly timely given the challenges affecting food production and supply globally. "This year's focus on food waste is particularly important at a time when climate change, conflicts, and other global challenges continue to disrupt food production and supply," she said. She stressed that the fight against environmental pollution must begin from individual homes, urging Nigerians to be more responsible with the resources they consume.
"Keeping our environment clean begins with reducing the waste we generate," she stated .
She called on households, businesses, and communities to reduce food waste, dispose of refuse properly, and adopt sustainable practices that protect the environment.
She emphasised that environmental cleanliness is not just about clearing refuse from streets but also about reducing the amount of waste generated in the first place.
The First Lady urged Nigerians to become more conscious and deliberate in how they purchase, prepare, consume, and preserve food, framing responsible consumption as a civic duty rather than a mere suggestion.
