‘Having a Male Child Is Not My Priority’ - Aliko Dangote Says His Three Daughters Could Do Better

Billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote has sparked conversations after revealing that having a male child to carry on his family legacy is not a priority for him. He also said he does not believe a son would have done better than his three daughters.

Nigerian billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote has sparked conversations after revealing that having a male heir to carry on his family name and business empire is not a priority for him.

The Dangote Group president made the statement during an interview with ARISE News while discussing his family, succession and the future of his multibillion-dollar business empire. Dangote, who has three daughters, Halima, Fatima and Mariya, was asked whether he still hoped to have a son, particularly given the traditional importance often attached to male heirs in Kano.

In response, the billionaire said having a son was not a priority.

“That one, I think, you know, it’s not my priority. God controls everything,” Dangote said.

He explained that while people may pray for a male child, having a son does not automatically guarantee that a family’s name or legacy will be protected. According to him, a son could even damage what his parents spent years building.

“You can pray for God to give you a son, but that son might be the one that would tear down the name of the family. So sometimes when God doesn’t give you something, don’t push,” he said.

Dangote then made a strong statement about his own daughters, saying he does not believe having a son would necessarily have produced a better result. “Even if I had a son, I don’t think the son would have done better than these three daughters that I have,” he declared.

The billionaire also revealed that he could see one of his daughters eventually taking charge of the Dangote Group. He said he has been watching all three of them and believes one has the potential to lead the company, adding that his daughters are genuinely interested in the business and are not being forced into it. Dangote further suggested that the next generation could potentially take the company beyond what he himself has achieved, describing his daughters as highly educated and capable of bringing new ideas to the business.

His comments have reignited the conversation around the traditional preference for male heirs, particularly in wealthy families where preserving a family name and business empire is often treated as a major responsibility.

For Dangote, however, the message appears clear: a family legacy is not automatically safer simply because a son can inherit it. And with his three daughters already involved in the family business, the bigger question now is whether one of them could eventually lead Africa’s biggest business empire.
