Ogogo’s Immortal Breakfast: How a Nollywood Line Helped Create Burna Boy’s Global Hit “Last Last”

Ogogo’s Immortal Breakfast: How a Nollywood Line Helped Create Burna Boy’s Global Hit “Last Last”

The song did very well. It became the fastest Afrobeats track to reach platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America. It gained hundreds of millions of plays on Spotify and YouTube.

When famous Yoruba Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, known as Ogogo, died on August 23, 2026, at age 66 after fighting stage four cancer, many people paid tribute to him. He ruled the screens for many years. But one of his biggest gifts to popular culture may not be any film role. It is one simple line that helped power Burna Boy’s 2022 hit song “Last Last”.

That track became one of the biggest Afrobeats songs in the world.

Ogogo’s most famous line was: “Gbogbo wa la ma je breakfast, asiko ti onikaluku ma je ti e, otototo ni.” It means everyone will eat breakfast. The only difference is the time each person eats it. He said it with calm power. At first the line was just a wise note about life. Everyone faces the same things, but at different times. People across Southwest Nigeria and beyond used it to calm those who felt left behind.

Later the meaning changed. Breakfast came to mean heartbreak and pain. When someone said “she served him hot breakfast,” it meant a person got their heart broken in a harsh way.

That new meaning fitted perfectly into Burna Boy’s song “Last Last”. The 2022 track samples Toni Braxton’s He Wasn’t Man Enough. It talks about the pain of a broken relationship in a clear, everyday way, just like Ogogo spoke on screen. The idea of breakfast as emotional hurt sits at the center of the song’s power.

The song did very well. It became the fastest Afrobeats track to reach platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America. It gained hundreds of millions of plays on Spotify and YouTube. It stayed popular in the United States, United Kingdom, and many other places. Toni Braxton also earned large publishing money from the hit. This linked old R and B with modern African music through a Yoruba actor’s words.

Ogogo never got official credit in the song notes. His influence was natural and deep. Only strong performers create this kind of lasting effect. People used his name in daily talk. They said a strong looking man was as solid as Ogogo. His fast energy on screen led to the phrase “Action po bi ogogo.” Olamide later used it in a song. In the 1990s film series Owo Blow, Ogogo played a robber with a good heart so well that he won Best Yoruba Actor in 1997. He acted in hundreds of films over 45 years and helped train many actors through the group he started in 1986.

“Last Last” simply made that influence heard around the world. A line from a local film, turned into common slang, became the feeling behind a song that brought Afrobeats to millions of new fans. After Ogogo’s burial in Ilaro, Ogun State, following Islamic rites, stars like Femi Adebayo and Funke Akindele said his work would live on. Every time Last Last plays in clubs, on playlists, or in cars, a bit of Ogogo’s breakfast is still being served. It stays hot, strong, and far from over.
