‘There Are No Bad Individuals in a Marriage’ - Funnybone Explains Why Couples Repeat Their Parents’ Patterns

Comedian Funnybone has shared his thoughts on why couples sometimes struggle in marriage, arguing that people often bring the values and relationship patterns they learned from their parents into their own homes.

Nigerian comedian Funnybone has sparked a conversation about marriage after sharing his thoughts on how people’s childhood experiences and family backgrounds can shape the way they behave in relationships.

According to the comedian, a troubled marriage does not always mean that one person is simply “bad” and the other is “good.” He argued that couples often bring the values, habits and relationship patterns they grew up seeing into their own marriages.

“There is no bad individual in that bad marriage. That man was good, that woman was good, but you’re coming from where you are carrying what you’re carrying from your foundation,” he said.

Funnybone explained that two people can be raised in completely different homes and develop very different ideas about communication, authority and what a healthy relationship should look like. He gave an example of a man who grew up in a home where his father always had the final say, while the woman he married grew up watching her mother take the lead as her father stayed quiet to avoid conflict. According to him, the man may naturally expect his voice and opinions to carry weight, while the woman may also expect to have an equally strong voice in the relationship.

Funnybone stressed that neither person is automatically wrong simply because they have different expectations. Instead, they have to understand where those expectations come from and find a way to build a common ground. The comedian also challenged the popular advice that people should simply “leave two adults to work it out” whenever couples experience problems.

“I don’t take the popular quote that leave two adults to work it out. What do you know that you’re working out?” he questioned.

He argued that couples can sometimes benefit from having trusted people who can hold them accountable, offer guidance and point out when they are getting things wrong.

Funnybone ultimately warned against being in a relationship with someone who has no one capable of correcting or holding them accountable.

“The most dangerous person to be with, relationship, business, family, courtship, is anybody who has no authority over him or her,” he said.

His comments have since raised an important question about marriage: are some relationship problems really about “bad people,” or are couples sometimes simply bringing two completely different family histories into the same home?
