British-Nigerian author and content creator Toni Tone has revealed the unusual agreement she has with her husband concerning the number of children they will have, saying his performance as a husband and father will determine whether the family welcomes more children.
Toni Tone Says Husband’s Behaviour Will Decide How Many Children They Have
Toni Tone has opened up about the arrangement she has made with her husband, Taiwo Ogebule, popularly known online as Taye9ja, over their plans for children.
The author, who is known for her relationship-focused book I Wish I Knew This Earlier: Lessons on Love, explained that although her husband would like to have five children, she does not intend to automatically agree to that number. Instead, she said they would essentially take things one child at a time, with her husband’s behaviour and involvement in the family influencing whether they continue expanding their household.
Speaking during an appearance on Ask the Universe, Toni explained that she had made her position clear to her husband from the beginning.
According to her, the number of children they eventually have will correspond with how well he performs his responsibilities as both a husband and a father. She said, “My husband wants five kids, and I told him, We’ve made a deal.
I’ve said to him look the amount of children you have is going to correspond to your behaviour as a husband and father.” Her comment was delivered in a light-hearted manner, but it also reflected her emphasis on the importance of how a man treats his wife and participates in raising his children.
Toni then explained how the arrangement would work in practical terms. She said that if her husband has one child and turns out to be an exceptional father, she would consider having a second child.
If they reach two children and she still feels well treated and supported as a wife and mother, she would consider a third. “So if you have one and you are like father of the year, I’ll give you a second. If you have two and I feel like I am queen of the world based on how you treat me and the kids, you have three,” she said. Her point was that having children should not simply be about reaching a predetermined number, but should also take into account the realities of parenting and marriage.
The author also made it clear that there is a limit to the arrangement. According to Toni, she would stop having more children if she began to notice that her husband was no longer putting in the same effort as before.
In her words, “I said, I’m going to cap you when your form starts slipping.” The statement has since attracted attention because of the humorous way she presented what is ultimately a serious issue in many marriages: the distribution of responsibilities after children arrive. For Toni, good behaviour as a husband and father is not something she wants to take for granted simply because the couple is already married.
Toni and Taye9ja got married in 2025 after making their relationship public, with their traditional wedding taking place in Lagos in September that year. Their relationship has also been part of the wider conversation around modern marriage, particularly because Toni has built much of her public platform around relationships, self-worth and personal growth.
Her latest comments therefore fit into the kind of direct conversations she has become known for, although this time she is using her own marriage and plans for a family as the example.
For Toni, the message appears straightforward: wanting a large family is one thing, but successfully raising several children requires commitment from both parents.
Her husband may have five children in mind, but according to the author, reaching that number will depend on what happens along the way. If he continues to show up as a supportive husband and an involved father, there may be more children; if his “form” drops, she says that is where the line will be drawn.
