"I Am a Billionaire in Naira, Not Dollars" – Peter Obi Clarifies His Wealth

Peter Obi has addressed persistent questions about his financial status, clarifying that he qualifies as a billionaire when his wealth is measured in naira, but not in US dollars.

"I Am a Billionaire in Naira, Not Dollars" – Peter Obi Clarifies His Wealth

The NDC presidential candidate made the clarification during an interview with media personalities Adeola Fayehun and Rudolf Okonkwo, where he was asked directly whether he is a billionaire.

His response was measured and specific. "Yes, I'm a billionaire in Naira. But not in dollars," he said. He explained that the standard measure for billionaire status is typically in US dollars, and by that measure, he does not claim the title.

"You know they usually measure billionaires in dollars. But in Naira, yes. Capital yes," he added. His comment suggests that while his assets and wealth may place him in the billionaire category when denominated in naira, he does not consider himself a dollar billionaire.

The distinction matters in a country where the naira's value fluctuates significantly against the dollar, making naira-denominated wealth a different proposition from dollar-denominated wealth.

The clarification comes amid recurring public discussions about Obi's wealth, business background, and financial standing, particularly in relation to his years in politics and his claims about his financial position before entering public office.

His supporters often cite his frugality and prudent management of public funds as evidence of his integrity, while critics question the sources of his wealth.

The interview clip quickly went viral, sparking mixed reactions online. Some Nigerians praised Obi for his honesty and for drawing a clear distinction between naira and dollar wealth, while others mocked the clarification as an attempt to have it both ways. The debate reflects broader conversations about wealth, transparency, and the expectations placed on political candidates in Nigeria.

Obi's statement adds another layer to the ongoing public discourse about his personal finances, which has intensified since his wife's luxury handbag became a topic of national debate. The NDC candidate has consistently maintained that his focus is on public service and the prudent management of national resources, even as questions about his personal wealth continue to surface.
